Sherene's Interview with Scoop September 16 2017

To promote the launch of the upcoming collection, SHERENE MELINDA attended Scoop in the Summer at London’s Saatchi Gallery from the 16th to the 18th July. News of the collection’s pre-Christmas arrival has already spread fast across social media, attracting the attention of the brand’s existing customer base and drawing in new patrons as well.

In order to support the collection’s debut at Scoop, Creative Director Sherene caught up with the trade show’s organisers to reveal more information about the forthcoming range at SHERENE MELINDA. In this blog we share snippets of what was discussed and encourage you to read the full interview (posted at the end).

Sherene has previously used a variety of different sources to help inspire each handbag, from manmade city architecture to the rich colours of nature. In the interview, she told us how a special painting she was given years ago by a friend used a mix of colour and shapes, a feature which inspired the upcoming collection.     

The venue for Scoop in the Summer, the Saatchi Gallery, is well known across the world for showcasing contemporary art. The annual international trade show stands above others for its infusion of art and fashion, a concept the wider industry and us in this blog have explored before.  Art and fashion are closely linked because although fashion is primarily functional and necessary, it is art that drives the creative use of colour, texture and shape in fashion.

One of many things Scoop does well is highlight this through the use of clean exhibition spaces that give prominence to the designer’s pieces and cause the event to appear as more of a gallery than a trade show. Eager to explore this concept with Sherene, the interviewer asked about her favourite artist, Russian born Kandinsky. Sherene also spoke about how a recent trip to the British Museum helped remind her of South Africa’s rich art history and culture and that some of the pieces she saw at the event also helped to inspire the upcoming collection.

A Summer Scoop September 09 2017

Surely there is nothing more exciting for Sherene Melinda than to have a new collection for trade buyers to view and for customers to look forward to. Having already had excellent shows and reviews in Los Angles and Paris this year it seemed only fitting to find a perfect summer event for London. What could be better than the Scoop fashion show, held over three hazy, crazy days in mid-July, at the world-famous Saatchi Gallery, just off Chelsea's King's Road. 

The World-famous Saatchi Gallery exhibits the finest in contemporary art and is renowned for its focus on bringing unknown talent to the fore. It has been a springboard to the launch of many stellar careers. Scoop’s presence at Saatchi started in 2011, holding twice yearly trade shows for premium and contemporary womenswear and accessories.

 

As well as the fantastic location and the expert organisation by Scoop, the show was beautifully curated. Perhaps it was just the lightness and happiness of summer, perhaps the setting of contemporary art at the same venue. Whatever it was, it was a unique and perfect ambience for buyers and sellers alike.

 

Among the big hits at the show was the Lou Lou Pouch, a small cute bag that can be worn with anything and at any time of day or night, with enough room for your lipstick, mobile phone and bank card, on so many occasions that can be all that is needed. 

Buyers at Scoop were also impressed by the versatility of use and the beautiful range of colours that Sherene Melinda has within the collections. As summer turns to autumn the chance to play with these designs and combinations abound.

 

On a crisp windy day, when the sky blue and the leaves at their most colourful, a large bag and a bold colour can reflect the Joie de vivre. As the tones of the season become more muted the same bag can add a burst of colour to bring sunshine to a grey day. Alternatively, a clever combination of deeper autumn shades can be used to reflect the poetic mists, harmony and calmness of a still autumn twilight.

Summer colours now available! June 28 2017

There’s been a whisper since spring first blossomed that we would be making the latest collection available in SS17’s colours. With the weather heating up and summer showing its first signs of life, it’s quaint that the time for that be now.

Shades of pink, yellow, lime green, apple green and orange were selected for the industry’s biggest catwalks showing this season’s staples. Mixing these bright tones with earthier browns, greys and neutrals set the trend for this summer. The newest handbags adopt this colour scheme whilst still maintaining the expressive and unique style of SHERENE MELINDA.

Summer can be a interesting time for finding a practical balance in fashion. It can sometimes feel that stocking your wardrobe can be redundant, with the inevitability of autumn’s chill on the horizon. The use of a natural material such as springbok hair-on-hide means that the colours in our collection contain various shades. This makes it easier to pair our pieces with the rest of your outfit and offers both brighter and darker shades that stay on trend from season to season.

SHERENE MELINDA goes to Hollywood! March 30 2017

In the wake of fashion’s newest season SHERENE MELINDA have been exhibiting at various international trade shows. After finishing Premiere Classe in Paris, we set off for the hills of Hollywood and the California Market Centre to exhibit the New Collection in the U.S for the first time.

It wasn’t long before we were introduced to typical life in Los Angeles after finding the set of a commercial right outside our hotel.

The advertisement was for Toyota and the car had a camera fixed on its bonnet, filming the fake rain hitting the windscreen. We are looking forward to seeing the finished result.

The Source British show itself spanned across two days and was held at the California Market Centre alongside the west coast’s biggest trade shows including LA Fashion Market, LA Kids Market, Capsule, Coeur, Select Better and Emerge. The display of the New Collection had a great impact on visitors attending the show.

Our time in Los Angeles concluded with a breathtaking photoshoot atop of the Griffith Observatory.

The Griffith Observatory sits on the south-facing slop of Mount Hollywood, with downtown Los Angeles to the southeast, Hollywood to the south and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest.

As the sun rose in the early hours of the morning and began to light up Downtown Los Angeles in the southeast, we capitalised by using the beautiful backdrop for a photoshoot of the New Collection. Creative Director Sherene collaborated with photographer Jack Rodrigeuz to produce some stunning imagery that will always be remembered.

It was the perfect conclusion to the trip and the trade show.

International trade show Premiere Classe March 23 2017

SHERENE MELINDA travelled to Paris this month in preparation for international trade show Premiere Classe. The prestigious event took place at the symbolic Jardin des Tuileries over four days, attracting some of the fashion industry’s biggest buyers from across the world.

We had to navigate rain showers throughout the weekend as we showcased the New Collection on Stand A312. The trade show had a luxurious appeal, with other exhibiting brands demonstrating unique design. Attendance to the show was internationally diverse.

A few brands used bright colours in their designs and some others used painted floral designs. The majority of brands however were relatively understated.

French patissiers were walking around with freshly made snacks for guests and exhibitors, and they even held an opening night soiree for anyone exhibiting. There was public exposure for us including visits from journalists, one who noted we were “one of the few brands that really caught her eye”.

Although emerging brands are often overlooked when first exhibiting, we managed to secure orders. Premiere Classe was a new experience that served as a great way to kick off 2017. Only two months in, SHERENE MELINDA is already starting to grow their international reach.

The next stop will be the California Market Centre as part of Source British; a new trade show based in Los Angeles. It will join a handful of events held in the building including LA Fashion Market, LA Kids Market, Capsule, Coeur, Select Better and Emerge.

Interview with the designer of the New Collection March 02 2017

This week Creative Director Sherene answered several questions about the New Collection in the lead up to it’s appearance at international trade shows Premiere Classe in Paris and Source British in Los Angeles.

What was the main source of inspiration behind the New Collection?

“I have designed the collection using London’s historic architecture and rich multiculturalism as a source of inspiration. Having travelled and experienced different cultures has helped to create a collection that has a universal appeal. The addition of the unisex backpack was intended to ensure the collection would work not only across international markets but also to have a gender-neutral appeal".



Did designing the previous collections help or change your thought process?

“Absolutely. When creating something for the first time, I learn a lot from the process and this helps to improve the next creation. This includes thinking about how people use the style of the handbag and what people want from a handbag. That is why being in a role that is focused on creativity is so fulfilling as I love learning. Being able to work with new trends, materials, colours, techniques and inspirations from collection to collection is a real joy”.

How did you balance customer feedback with your own ideas about what you wanted the collection to be?

“Customer feedback is essential because it helps realise areas for improvement and have an understanding of the things we are doing right. This knowledge then needs to be put in the backdrop of having a clear idea of what the brand is about and what the finished product should be – it’s a fine balance. Receiving feedback puts us at an advantage. It gives us more confidence with knowing how receptive people will be to the new collection as ultimately our job is to create something new and interesting”.

What played a greater role in designing the collection – creativity or commercial awareness?

“Definitely both and that is where I think as a fashion brand we either succeed or we don’t. The way that customers respond to previous collections becomes engrained in the thought process and this will affect the design. The important thing is to juggle that with staying creative. Financially, I have a rough idea of what the final price range of a handbag will be but never limit the design to a price at the start of the process as this can compromise the creativity and quality of the end product. 

The brand has grown in various ways recently including the number of resources around you – did this help at all in regards to the New Collection?

“Yes because it allows me to give more focus to the necessary aspects of my work. A bigger team has meant more input into many areas of the business including both the creative and commercial aspects of the collection. I believe that the latest collection has seen growth in different areas partly as a result of having those resources around me”

What did you find most challenging when designing the New Collection?

“The most challenging thing is questioning myself and my thought process – does what I’m designing meet with our brand values and is it unique enough? There is naturally a feeling of pressure when designing a new collection. I have to think about whether it ticks all the boxes concerning our existing customers and then balancing that with the need to grow including internationally. I am a perfectionist, which means that I am my greatest critic and ultimately this is my livelihood.

This collection has been designed with an international market in mind, as the goal has always been to have a multinational brand. We are exhibiting at Source British and Premiere Classe this month, trade shows based in Los Angeles and Paris respectively. So consideration has to be given to how a style and colour suit the lifestyle of someone living in America, Paris, Italy or Japan for example. I think about different cultures and how that affects the clothes that people wear. To me it is the ultimate reality of understanding what people want and designing a collection that can fulfil this”

What has been the impact of the New Collection so far? How have people responded?

The collection was showcased as part of a London Fashion Week collaboration. I think that people in the industry are realising we are serious about what we’re doing and our approach seems to be working. All aspects of the brand and the collection are evolving and we are starting to make tracks into areas that haven’t been open to us in the past. Our existing customer base has been excited to see the new bags and we’ve received positive comments about them. We’re selling more and more so we must be doing something right!

What’s next for SHERENE MELINDA? Do you have any more plans for another collection in the near future?

Yes we are currently working on the next collection to be released at the end of this year – very exciting but I shall say no more!

Exhibiting at Source British this March February 09 2017

In the summer of 2015, SHERENE MELINDA attended our first trade show in London. This March we are embarking to the west coast of America to exhibit at the brand new trade show Source British.

The event takes place in the California Market Centre (pictured below) from 13th to 14th March, in the heart of LA’s fashion market and is exclusively dedicated to British brands. Los Angeles is penned as the world’s next fashion capital, with Saint Laurent recently moving their HQ there and designers Tom Ford and Louis Vuitton choosing the location to showcase their latest collections.

“The Los Angeles fashion movement has been bubbling for a few years, part of a large creative renaissance that includes art and design. It’s exciting to see the movement continue to grow, especially as taste makers make the move west”

The complexity, competitiveness and saturation of New York’s fashion market has inspired more and more buyers to move west. If Los Angeles were a country, it would be considered the 6th largest economy in the world, with a culture that encourages entrepreneurial spirit and expressiveness in business.

This commercial approach combined with California’s growing population of 38 million is creating twice as many jobs in fashion compared with anywhere else. It has also attracted the biggest brands in technology, with Google, Facebook and Apple choosing to make base in San Francisco’s Silicon Valley.

LA’s economy is not the only reason why British brands are showcasing here. 97% of west coast buyers have said they want to see British fashion brands with 50% claiming they were interested in specifically stocking them. The reason for this is America’s admiration for British design techniques and quality. US customers love British brands and products because they have a tradition of good craft and secrets, passed down from generation to generation.

In March Source British will run alongside the LA Fashion Market, LA Kids Market, Capsule, SELECT Better and Emerge at the California Market Centre. The eventful week will create a hub in LA that will be full of buyers from across America. Having the chance to meet them face-to-face, introduce them to SHERENE MELINDA and create brand awareness is an opportunity we just couldn’t say no to! The chance to meet other designer brands and experience LA’s street culture will also be a fantastic source of inspiration.

Reflecting back on 2016 January 11 2017

At SHERENE MELINDA, it’s become tradition to summarise our experiences at the end of each year in our blog. 2016 saw the release of our latest collection, developments in the trade market, a showcase at London Fashion Week and more events than any other year. 

The beginning of the year was like the calm before the storm, as we finalised the designs of our New Collection and prepared ourselves for an eventful summer and rest of the year. We kicked off proceedings with a welcomed invitation to the Queen’s 90th Birthday, a special perk for exhibiting at The Royal Windsor Horse Show.

After the first samples arrived for the New Collection, we visited the picturesque area of Notting Hill for a lifestyle shoot. This was the first photoshoot we had done in the city, which made it really special. There was a great team having fun on location in the busy streets of Portobello Market on a hot summers day. It took many hours to complete the shoot with the patience of our photographer, model and even two men walking by who agreed to showcase the unisex backpack. We got some fantastic photos! 

These images were first used in the lookbook in preparation for the trade show Scoop in the City, which took place at the historical Old Billingsgate Market. Scoop was the first time we showcased the New Collection to an audience and was an important stepping-stone for growing our trade enquiries.

After the trade show, we sensed a growing anticipation amongst our retail customers for the New Collection. We wrote this blog, which released the first details of the collection and explained more about the ideas behind each handbag.

Following a successful debut at 2015's Africa Fashion Week London, we knew that we had to go back with a New Collection and leave an impact on the catwalk once again. The handbags looked stunning against the backdrop of the runway and paired beautifully with the coloured kikois that the models wore. The last little additional touches were some handcrafted springbok hair-on-hide foot wraps that decorated the feet of the models in true style. 

One catwalk show was not enough for SHERENE MELINDA! The New Collection deserved more exposure and we had the opportunity to collaborate with Éthologie for the showcase of their newest collection at November's London Fashion Week 2016. The design of the runway was stunning and the outfits of Éthologie were a great accompaniment to our handbags. The models had to walk along a catwalk layered with sand and pebbles, which they managed to do faultlessly, even in their towering heels!

As the summer drew to a close there were still events to attend alongside focusing on the release of the New Collection. This proved to be demanding as we spent long weekends at shows around the country. It has proved to be worthwhile as there has been an increasing interest and many orders for our new handbags. Our Black Friday sale was a wonderful finish to the year. 

In 2016, SHERENE MELINDA has grown our collection, team and the trade side of our business. It has been a successful year, where all have worked hard and we want to say thank you to everyone involved.

We already have big plans for 2017 – in March we will be jetting to Los Angeles for our first US-based trade show as well as showcasing the brand at the prestigious Premiere Classe Tuileres, Paris. Looking back on the year reviews from 2014 and 2015 shows us just how far we’ve come and we know that this brand has the potential for even greater growth. We appreciate the on-going support we receive from our customers and we want to say thank you for that. The positive feedback we often receive is a great encouragement. We wish you all the best for 2017.

The unisex leather backpack December 01 2016

The New Collection at SHERENE MELINDA is now available for sale on the website and we’ve already received several orders following the highly anticipated release. At SHERENE MELINDA, one of our main goals is to design handbags that are universally appealing and because of this, the New Collection features the brand’s first unisex bag – the Leather Backpack.

Designing a unisex item of clothing 

Unisex clothing is difficult to find in mainstream fashion because clothing generally uses different design techniques to create an end product that either comfortably fits the body shape of a man or a woman. This is not a problem for handbags because a bag is worn in the same way by both genders.

Converse also takes advantage of this concept, the key difference across their collections is the size of the shoe but the shape is the same for both genders. The SHERENE MELINDA backpack uses a straight silhouette with clean lines and edges to create a shape that will compliment the figures of both men and women. The main variants across the collection are the choice of colour and the style of the hair-piece.

The challenges of creating a universal size

Having the opportunity to create a unisex accessory is great, however, the execution needs to be perfect. Unlike Converse, we could not offer various sizes that would be better suited to men or women. We needed to find a balance and create a size that would suit the body shapes of both genders. This required research and testing, including modeling samples, and we decided on a size of 30 cm width and 36 cm height.

Seasonal shades for both genders

One key distinction across the collection is colour, which varies from neutral blacks and browns to vibrant yellows and pinks. We have created a selection of colour that offers on trend colours for both men and women this winter season.

Style of the springbok hair-on-hide

All collections at SHERENE MELINDA use authentic springbok hair-on-hide, which is a natural material and can therefore either fan outwards or lay flat. This distinction works well for creating a unisex handbag, where either piece may be better suited to a man or a woman depending on their preference.

Popularity of the satchel bag November 24 2016

With the New Collection soon to be launched, we’ve been taking the time to focus some of our blog articles on the new pieces on offer at SHERENE MELINDA. We’ve recently explored the history of particular handbag styles, such as the tote bag, and in this week’s blog we shine the light on the satchel handbag.

The design of the satchel

The satchel’s simple shape makes it an ideal accessory for carrying items and this has made it useful throughout history for a variety of purposes. Its generally small shape make it ideal for travelling long distances alongside the comfort of the strap, which can either be worn across the body or over the shoulder. It is for these reasons that the satchel is also commonly referred to as a messenger bag.

The first signs of the satchel

We can see evidence of satchel type bags being used as far back as the Roman times. In TV shows or film adaptations, messengers are often wearing satchel bags. Historians have noted that these types of bags were worn, mainly by soldiers, to carry rations or personal belongings and were called Loculus, which literally translates as ‘little place’ in Latin. 

When did satchels become popularised in fashion?

SS17 Colour Trends October 28 2016

September heralds the arrival of autumn and fashion’s busiest period for SS17 – with the industry’s top designers, models, journalists and bloggers beginning their jet set tour from the skyscrapers of New York to the skylines of London, Paris and Milan.

Following our collaboration with Éthologie at this year’s London Fashion Week, we're now looking back at the runways of the world’s biggest Fashion Weeks, where one theme that stood out this year was the designers’ use of colour combinations, some of which are shown below. 

Stella McCartney adopted complimentary neutral shades, as seen in their SS17 collection showcase in Paris:

Balenciaga shows they are not afraid to use vibrant colour in their latest collection, which debuted at Paris Fashion Week:

The use of shades of olive green by Sonia Rykiel was something that really stood out:

Collaboration with Éthologie at London Fashion Week 2016 September 29 2016

SHERENE MELINDA steps down from one catwalk and on to another this September. After completing Africa Fashion Week London 2016, we were presented with the opportunity of collaborating with contemporary fashion brand Éthologie on the showcase of their New Collection at this year’s London Fashion Week.

With a growing international appeal and anticipation for the New Collection, a debut at Scoop in the City in July and the first US-based trade show booked for early next year, we just couldn’t let this chance go. Éthologie was launched in 2013 by designer Jasper Garvida and has since captured the attention of celebrities including Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Previous pieces have appeared in Vogue, Elle and Grazia.

The catwalk show paired pieces from our New Collection with those of Éthologie’s, titled “TIGER IN A TROPICAL STORM”, which includes beautiful handmade dresses that use a variety of design techniques. The show took place at the Bloomsbury Hotel in front of an international audience of high profile bloggers, media and celebrities.

We would like to extend our thanks to Éthologie for making this collaborative experience so special.
